Continuing Education Roundup: Sept-Oct

October 27, 2016 By Julie Ferrario

It’s been an exciting kick-off to the 2016 school year, and the Art Docents have hosted a variety of continuing education events where members learn, collaborate and connect.

Sketchbook Journaling
Our own Julie F. led a sketchbook journaling class in September at the Art Docent office. Junior Art Docents were included in this event, where members worked on their individual sketchbooks and watercolor masterpieces. Everybody enjoyed working together and sharing art experiences with each other.

Beach Day
Beach Day was a big success with 13 people attending (including one trainee). We enjoyed gorgeous weather during yoga and a stroll on Twin Lakes State Beach in Santa Cruz, and the succulent gardens provided an opportunity for conversation and creativity.

San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA)
A group of Art Docents visited the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in downtown San Jose to tour the Connect and Collect Art Auction Exhibition. Connect & Collect is an ICA event that provides an opportunity for art enthusiasts and collectors “to view and purchase artwork by rising stars and celebrated artists whose work reflects the scope of the art world’s vibrant and eclectic styles and interests,” and includes paintings, photography, sculpture and mixed-media art from almost 200 artists.

Whitney Modern Art Gallery
On October 18th we were invited on a private tour of the Whitney Modern Art Gallery in downtown Los Gatos. This new gallery is owned by Suzanne Whitney Smedt and her artist husband, Gordon Smedt, who were also our featured guest speakers at the October general meeting. We were introduced to works by the seven artists represented by the gallery which included paintings, sculpture and photography.

Pumpkin Decorating
We enjoyed a fun evening at the Art Docent office decorating pumpkins on October 20. Attendees, including Art Docents and Junior Art Docents, brought their own pumpkins and embellishments were supplied. It was a great way to get the Halloween season started!

President’s Letter: November 2016

November 4, 2016 By Julie Ferrario

We have a lot to be thankful for.  As one of the most successful art groups in the Bay, The Art Docents of Los Gatos are committed to being the very best in all that we do. Through our focus on print presentations, community outreach and local partnerships, our collaborative and coordinated approach to art appreciation enables our members to work together and apply lessons and high levels of passion in the classroom to benefit the lives of our students. And through our personalized and enthusiastic approach to teach art, we continue to set the standard and raise the bar in making high quality educational programs, in a useful and relevant format.

Observe the 7th Graders in their Art Docent led Scientific Illustrations Class below

And visit us at the downtown Farmers Market on Sunday, November 20th, from 9-noon. We will have free art prints to giveaway, and crafts for children.

These highlights are just a few of the ways we transform art appreciation, improving the quality of education. These and other events reflect the excellent work we are doing across our district, and demonstrate our ongoing commitment to set the standard for how art education can best be delivered. Training Update – November 2016

November 4, 2016 By Julie Ferrario

Training Update – November 2016

Training Class Update –   The class continues to show their commitment, drive and desire. Proof in the pudding is all 18 are still with us after 6 weeks.  They’re eagerly learning from observing and helping seasoned docents. Many attended their first General Meeting and the Trainee mixer.

Week three the class broke up into small groups and presented a 5 min. single print. This was their first time in front of the class.  They got their nervousness out of the way and learned a great deal from each of the print presentations.

Week four Tabitha J. gave a full 3rd grade – Abstract Art lesson and Workshop.  Learning by example and participation is key to their training.  They all enjoyed the presentation and created beautiful abstract art.

Week five was our field trip to Daves Avenue to watch Marisa D. (Class of 2016) teach a 2nd grade – Color & Value lesson.  When we returned discussion centered around her presentation and how it related to the homework – AD curriculum, classroom skills, and classroom preparation.  Trainees are not only learning from seasoned docents but from the open dialogue shared about what they observe.

Week six each trainee presented in class a single print for 5 mins. They were each given a grade level, specific visual art terms and a fine art print.  Each and everyone did a fantastic job.  They introduced themselves. Told us what grade they were presenting.  Then introduced the visual art terms with detailed explanations.  From there came the fine art print with three well prepared questions. They engaged the entire class, generated additional questions from answers given and even fielded off distractions with re-directions and composure.  At the end they beautifully recapped the visual art terms and thanked the class for their participation.

Docent Spotlight: Mark Vantress

October 4, 2016 By Julie Ferrario

Mark_VantressChanging careers can be a scary proposition, but for Art Docent Mark Vantress, it was strategic transition that’s been a long time coming. This summer denoted the official beginning to life as a full-time professional artist for Mark, who previously worked as a sales and marketing executive. He’s now part of our vibrant art community, and his paintings have sold at private exhibitions in Mountain View and Los Gatos, the Fillmore Jazz Festival in San Francisco, and through multiple private commissions.

Mark became a docent last year because he believes in our organization’s mission to bring art into children’s lives. He’s not just generous with his time, either. Mark donates proceeds from sales at various fundraising events, and the Art Docents was one of the fortunate organizations to receive money in 2016. His hope is that kids will see art not only as something beautiful to be appreciated, but as a real vocation.

As a student at the University of California San Diego, Mark pursued a psychology degree despite having a profound passion for art, just so he’d have something “to fall back on.” It’s a practical strategy that often sidelines prospective artists for years, if not decades. This is why Vantress is so encouraged by the Art Docent’s Guest Artist program, which he’s heading up this year.

“It’s almost like career day,” he says of the Guest Artist event that brings working artists into the Los Gatos schools for demonstrations. “When I was growing up, that wasn’t really shown to be an option.” Vantress sees art not only as a viable career choice for young people, but as a way to bring balance to our culture and society. The image of the starving artist is just that, an image, he says, not a forgone conclusion. We need to communicate that art is also a business, and it can be just as profitable and life-sustaining as it is soulful and inspiring.

These days you can find Mark creating large-scale abstract expressionistic art at his studio or volunteering in his 2nd grader’s classroom as an Art Docent (his younger daughter will hit the LGUSD scene next year). His 2015 training class would tell you he deserves the “Best Under Pressure Award,” and he’s a ready mentor for incoming docents and aspiring artists alike. Here’s what he had to say in his own words:

Why did you choose to volunteer with the Art Docents?

We were new to the community and this was a great way to meet people and to volunteer. Also, as I prepared to transition to a full-time artist, I wanted to take actions that were consistent with being an artist, and the Art Docents fills that need on a variety of levels.

In your new life as a professional artist, how are you finding the art community in Los Gatos?

It’s been very supportive, which I’m glad about. Other artists have been so generous with their time and energy with me. I am also excited about the quality of exhibits that are going on at NUMU and JCO’s, the rejuvenation of Gallery 24 and the opening of the Whitney Modern. It’s a great time to be an artist in Los Gatos!

What artists’ influence you or your work?

My work is influenced by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollack, Clyfford Still, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, John DiPaolo and Charles Eckart.

What is your philosophy of art?

My philosophy is that works of art should have energy that is honest and authentic and created with respect to the principles and techniques of the craft.

How can we help support you?

I’m always looking for restaurants or even designer showrooms to display my art. I’m also working with an interior designer that uses my paintings in home staging, so there’s opportunity there as well. Some artists don’t like to paint for decoration, but I’m not like that!

President’s Letter – October 2016

October 3, 2016 By Julie Ferrario

President’s Letter October 2016,

Social Media has changed the way we see our world—literally—and it has enhanced the way we speak with one another. We get to exclaim to the universe, “This is who we are and this is what we do!” After serving the Los Gatos community for more than 40 years, it is an exciting prospect to be able to communicate our passions and experiences, get feedback and spread ideas, directly with the community.

Thank you for supporting our mission to spread the love of art appreciation by checking us out on Social Media, where we get to say, “We are proud to be the Art Docents, positively affecting the lives of our youth for generations to come, and sharing what we do with our local community and the world.”

We’re active on Facebook and we regularly update our website (artdocents.com) with information about our programs and activities. We share moments that make us smile and that positively impact those we serve: the families of Los Gatos. For me, social media is about sharing the good we do, and reinforcing the love we, as Art Docents of Los Gatos, feel for our community.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH:

If you want to touch the past, touch a rock.

If you want to touch the present touch a rose.

If you want to touch the future, touch a life.

Thank you,
Michelle Abene
President
Art Docents of Los Gatos
